History of the catholic parish in Chromtau

In the 1980s the first efforts were made to register the parish – the religious community. On June 7, 1988 a permission was given in Moscow to create a religious community in Chromtau. On September 14, 1988 Eugenia Martin presented a half of her house together with the parcel to the parish. Since then the house has served as a chapel.

Since 1994 the parish entered a new chapter of its history, for two priests: Rev. Tadeusz Smereczynski and Rev. Guido Becker came to Aktjubinsk for keeps. Particularly the latter took pastoral care of the religious community of Chromtau. Since then it is possible also to talk about a parish as such, leastwise a branch of the parish in Aktjubinsk.

The apostolic administrator in Atyrau – Rev. Janusz Kaleta, founded an independent Holy Family Parish in Chromtau by the decree of February 4, 2004. In that year an apartment for the priest was bought. Rev. Jan Trela, as the first parish administrator, went to live there.

Since 2006 efforts have been made to obtain a building site for a new church. Regrettably, all the care has been futile so far. It is expected that we will need to use the prayer house, that is currently owned by the parish, for at least three to four years. Unfortunately, it finds itself in a poor technical state.

In order to be used further on, the building needs to undergo a serious repair. According to preliminary estimation the cost of the works will be around 30.000 – 40.000 USD.
