Janusz Kaleta, born 11th Oct. 1964, since 5th Feb. 2011, the Catholic Bishop of Karaganda, and since 7th July 1999 the Apostolic Administrator of Atyrau.
Born 11.10.1964 in the town of Lazy, near Zawerce (Poland). Completed general education at the Secondary School of Bobowa and in 1983 entered the High Priest Seminary of Tarnow.
In 1989 was ordained priest for the Diocese of Tarnow by Bishop Jerzy Karol Ablewicz.
From 1993 till 1993 he worked as a priest in the parish of Nowy-Wisnicz, while at the same time studying at the Pontifical Theological Academy of Cracow, where he obtained his licentiate.
Since 1993 he continued his studies at the Theological Faculty of Innsbruck where in 1997 he obtained his Doctor’s Degree with a thesis on moral theology. Back in Poland, he worked as a priest in the parish of St. Nicholas in the town of Bochnia while teaching bioethics at the Papal Theological Academy of Cracow.
7th July 1999 he was nominated Apostolic Administrator of Atyrau. On 6th May 2003, he received the nomination as Papal Prelate.
15th September 2006, he was consecrated bishop (the sacrament was conferred by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, accompanied by the Bishop of Tarnow, Mgr. Wiktor Skworc and the bishop of the dioceses of the Most Holy Trinity in Almaty, Mgr. Henry Theophile Howaniec.
5th Febr. 2001, he was named Bishop of Karaganda after the Pope in Rome, Benedict XVI had accepted the request from the Archbishop Jan-Pawel Lenga to retire from the post. At the same time, he he retains full authority as the Apostolic Administrator of Atyrau “donec aliter provideatur” (until someone else is nominated).
